Illuminated address presented to James Perry, 1899
![]() |
This address was presented to James Perry in May 1898 by the residents of Rathmines, where he had been stationed since 1890, thanking him for his contribution to their community. He was also presented with a gold watch and sovereigns, but the watch's whereabouts are unknown today. The address is painted with watercolours, with celtic banding around the edge and a miniature painting in each corner, one of which has been cut away. It has been passed down through our family, although what happened to it immediately after James Perry's death is unknown. The address was in very bad condition, as you can see. It had warped and some paint is flaking off. The card that it is backed on had also become acidic, which could have made the paint very unstable and liable to flake even more. The address has now been conserved by a professional conservator. I will post the 'after' pictures soon. |
