James Perry would have moved to Dublin around 1875, when he joined the Dublin Metropolitan Police. His personel records say that he was 5 feet 9 and a farmer by trade. He was appointed at the Phoenix Park depot on the north side of Dublin. he joined the Dublin Metropolitan Police. His official records say that he was recommended to the force by Sir E O'Loughlin, an MP in his native Clare. Although his records state that he was born in 1855, it is thought that he lied about his age in order to get around age restrictions on joining the police force.
James was promoted to Sergeant in 1880, Station Sergeant in 1884 and Inspector in 1890. He had a succesful career in the police force and was coach of the world championship DMP tug of war team. In 1880 he had married Sarah Caffery, the daughter of Edward and Catherine (nee Broughall) Caffrey in her native parish of Monasterevin, county Kildare. They probably met through Sarah's brother-in-law, John O'Toole, who was also a member of the police force. The couple lived in Dublin and had the following children:
- Mary Josephine Perry, born 1884
- Kathleen Perry, born 1885
- James Perry, born 1886
- Edward Perry, born 1888
- Francis Perry, born 1889
- Elizabeth Perry, born 1890
- Joseph Perry, born 1892
- Patrick Perry, born 1893
- Michael Christopher Perry, born 1895
- Sarah Perry, born 1899
James became ill in 1899 and went to stay with his wife's family in Monasteriven, in the hope that the country air would do him good. He never recovered and died there in August of the same year, at the age of 55. His wife, Sarah died shortly afterwards, leaving their young children orphans. Their daughters moved to Kildare to live with their aunts and the sons were sent to orphanages in Glasnevin and Marino, Dublin. James and Sarah are buried in an unmarked grave in Glasnevin Cemetery along with 2 of their children.
