The Perry Family of Woodrooffe, County Tipperary and Cork
Back to the Perry Family
One of the most well documented Perry families in Ireland are the Perry family of Woodruffe, County Tipperary, some of whom moved to Cork and still remain there. The Perrys of Kilboy were previously thought to have descended from this family. DNA testing has proven that the Woodrooffe Perrys and the Kilboy Perrys are not related in the male line, but there is still the possiblity of a connection between the two families, through a female descent. For full details of this family, please go to The Perry Families of Ireland website. This family was brought to Ireland by Richard Perry, an English merchant who moved to Tipperary in the late 1650s with his wife, Mary (nee Malbone) and children. Only one child, Micajah, the eldest, stayed in England and founded the Company, Perry and Lane, who are the subject of a book by Jacob Price, Perry of London. One of Micajah's grandsons, also Micajah, became Lord Mayor of London. The Perry family had been very mobile up to this point. Richard's father, also Richard had been born in Exeter, Devon before moving to London where his children were born. Although Richard the elder died in London, his son emigrated to New England, America in the late 1630s, participating in the founding of the colonly of New Haven, before returning to England in 1647. He is found in Glasgow in 1656, before settling with his family in Clonmel, Tipperary in the late 1650s. One of Richard's sons, John, remained in Tipperary and is the forefather of the Woodrooffe and Cork families.
The Pery family of Woodrooffe are descended from the English Perrys
